A Hand-Painted Navy Kitchen in Wimbledon: From MDF Build to Finished Island

When our clients in Wimbledon asked us for a kitchen with real character — something you simply can't get off the shelf — we knew a hand-painted bespoke build was the answer. Here's how the project came together, from raw MDF panels to a deep navy kitchen with a full-size island.

The brief

The family wanted a classic shaker look with a modern feel: a large central island for cooking and homework, a Belfast sink, brass hardware, and a colour with depth that would still feel calm every day. Off-the-peg units wouldn't fit the space properly, so we designed and built everything to measure.

Building the kitchen from scratch

Every carcass, door and panel was built in MDF, cut and fitted to the exact dimensions of the room. Building this way means no awkward filler strips and no wasted space — the island, larder units and open shelving all sit precisely where they should.

At this stage the kitchen looks raw, but this is where the quality is decided. Tight joints, level frames and properly fitted doors are what make a hand-painted finish last.

The hand-painted finish

Once the build was complete, everything was primed, sanded and painted by hand in deep navy. Hand-painting gives a depth and softness that spray finishes can't match — and years down the line, it can be refreshed or even recoloured without replacing a single unit.

We paired the navy with brass handles, a white worktop and a traditional Belfast sink.

The result

A kitchen that's completely unique to this Wimbledon home — built to the millimetre, hand-painted, and made to be lived in. The island has become the heart of the house, exactly as the family hoped.
