Matching what is already there
In a period house the hardest part of new joinery is making it look old. Victorian skirting profiles are not the ones sold in merchants today, architraves differ from floor to floor, and a modern door in an old frame announces itself immediately.
Panelling, dado rails and the hallway
Wall panelling is the most requested job on this list, and the hallway is where it earns its keep — it takes the knocks from bags and bikes, and it makes a narrow Victorian corridor look considered rather than empty. We build it to the proportions of the room rather than a standard height, mitre the corners properly, and paint it in the same visit. The same applies to dado rails, picture rails and under-stair panelling.
After the builders leave
A lot of our carpentry follows an extension or a loft conversion, when the structural work is done and the room still does not feel finished. Skirting and architrave to match the rest of the house, doors hung and adjusted, a partition wall, loft boarding for storage, shelving built into the space the design left over.
