Richmond homes we know well
The Georgian townhouses around Richmond Green and the Hill have fine mouldings, panelled shutters and lime plaster that behaves nothing like modern board — the preparation is the job, and the paint is the easy part. The Victorian villas of Kew have deep hallways, stained glass and a lot of woodwork. The cottages at Ham and Petersham are smaller and often damper, so timing exterior work matters. And the mansion flats on Richmond Hill are usually clean, quick redecorations with access to arrange in advance.
Conservation areas, sash windows and exteriors
Much of Richmond sits in a conservation area, and a good deal of it is listed, so exterior colours and materials are not always a free choice — worth checking with the council before you settle on a front door colour, and we are happy to talk it through. Sash windows need the joints eased, the putty made good and the right paint on the right timber if they are still to open in five years. We work back from the weather on exterior jobs and will say so if a month is wrong for it, rather than take the booking anyway.
