The subfloor is most of the job
Almost every flooring failure starts underneath. Victorian houses have suspended timber floors that flex and are rarely level; concrete in a newer flat or an extension holds moisture for far longer than people expect. We check level and moisture before anything is ordered, then do what the floor needs — ply overlay, levelling compound, a damp-proof membrane, or simply time. Skipping that stage is why floors lift, creak or gap a year later, and it is not a stage we skip.
Herringbone, chevron and the patterned floors
Parquet is having a long moment and it is a genuinely different job from laying planks. The pattern has to be set out from the centre of the room so the borders land evenly, blocks are cut round chimney breasts and bays rather than butted up to them, and a herringbone floor laid off-square is obvious forever. We lay herringbone, chevron and Versailles panels, with or without a border, and can sand and finish on site.
Which floor suits which room
Engineered wood is the sensible choice over underfloor heating and in kitchens, where solid timber moves too much. LVT handles bathrooms, utility rooms and houses with dogs, and now looks far better than it used to. Laminate still makes sense on a budget or in a rental between tenancies. Tile belongs in wet rooms, porches and outside. We will tell you honestly which one suits the room, including when the cheaper option is the right one.
